October 2017 News

In the Summer six Explorer Scouts from the 13th took part in an Expedition to South Africa. Each attendee worked hard to raise £2,400 which was required for the trip. Three achieved the Explorer Belt Award, which promotes adventure and self-reliance in an international context. They all took part in various projects to help and improve conditions for local people, worked with local Scouts in the areas they visited and had a great trip without mishap. The Expedition will change their lives forever and will give them something great to remember from their time in Scouting.

Scouts and Explorers attended the Suffolk Scout and Guide MOOT at the old RAF Bentwaters site for 5 days at the end of August. The weather was fantastic and made for a great camp on a remote part of the airfield. Over 1200 people were on site including 850 youngsters. This event is held every 4 years and there were over 60 activities available for them to choose from, plus the main events through the weekend.

Beavers have had sleepovers and a joint camp with another Beaver Colony. The Cub Pack has also been to Camp locally. Scouts attended the RN Sea Scout Camp based aboard HMS Bristol in Portsmouth. Some Explorers went Tall Ship sailing with Adventures Offshore on the East Coast and one attended the ASTO Small Tall Ships Race in the Baltic.

Next year, along with our normal camps and activities, we will have our bi-annual Group Camp in September. We are also hopeful that some Scouts and/or Explorers will be selected to attend the next World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, USA in 2019. Those that are selected will each have to raise £3,800 and we aim to help them in any way we can, with fundraising ideas or practical opportunities.

In April the 13th Ipswich were inspected by Lt. Linda Torbet RN as part of our Royal Navy Recognition. I am pleased to report once again we demonstrated that the Scout Group was working well, providing development for youngsters in all the required areas and has good management in all Section Leaders and Executive Committee.
